CDC updates pneumococcal vaccine recommendations in older adults

KEY POINT

CDC has adopted new recommendations from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) that all adults 65 years and older should routinely receive both the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV13, Prevnar 13—Wyeth, Pfizer) and the 23-valent pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine (PPSV23, Pneumovax 23—Merck) in series. Younger adults with certain chronic diseases should continue to receive PPSV23.
