Asthma exacerbations during first trimester increase congenital malformations



A 50% increase in the risk of congenital malformations was noted in babies born to mothers who had at least one asthma exacerbation during their first trimester compared with women with asthma who did not experience an exacerbation. A twofold increase in the risk of major malformations was found in babies of mothers with asthma exacerbations who did not fill any prescriptions for oral corticosteroids during pregnancy.
