Glomerular filtration rate better than serum creatine to determine metformin eligibility

KEY POINT

Research has shown that estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is a better determinant of metformin eligibility than serum creatinine (sCr), prompting FDA to announce that eGFR should be the preferred measure of kidney function before starting metformin, with use recommended in patients with an eGFR of at least 45 mL/min/1.73 m2.
