Added benefits: Some antiretrovirals block hepatitis B infection in patients with HIV

KEY POINT

HIV-infected individuals taking antiretroviral therapy (ART) that contains lamivudine (Epivir—GlaxoSmithKline) or tenofovir (Viread—Gilead) were less likely to develop incident hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection during treatment as compared to those patients taking no or other ART regimens. However, the protective effects of these ART regimens did not persist in patients infected with lamuvidine-resistant HBV strains.
