Iowa mumps epidemic prompts ACIP immunization update

KEY POINT

More than 2,500 cases of mumps were documented in 11 states in the midwestern parts of the U.S. from in the first 5 months of this year, and more are likely. This prompted the CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) to update its 1998 recommendations for prevention of mumps infection to include that all at-risk persons receive two doses of the live mumps virus vaccine.
