Vaccines and biologics: Can they mix?

KEY POINT

According to a recent systematic review, patients with stable autoimmune rheumatic diseases (AIRDs) who are taking biologic agents (e.g., antitumor necrosis factor [TNF] inhibitors) are eligible to receive many inactivated vaccines, such as influenza and pneumococcal. Live vaccines should generally be avoided in these patients; little data exist to guide administration of some others vaccines, including hepatitis A and hepatitis B.
