ATP III Updated to Recommend More Aggressive Treatment of Some Patients

KEY POINT

LDL cholesterol (LDL-C) levels of 70 mg/dL should be targeted in patients whose risk of myocardial infarction or cardiovascular death is very high (e.g., patients with recent myocardial infarction or those with cardiovascular disease plus another risk factor such as diabetes or smoking), according to an update to the 2001 guidelines of the Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) of the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP).
