Linezolid linked to serotonin syndrome

KEY POINT

Linezolid (Zyvox—Pharmacia), an extended-spectrum gram-positive antibiotic, is also a weak, reversible inhibitor of monoamine oxidase (MAO) types A and B. When taken with other drugs that increase serotonin levels, linezolid can cause serotonin syndrome, as is now being shown in postmarketing surveillance data. Several reported cases have been fatal, according to an article in the June 1 issue of Clinical Infectious Diseases.
