Response rates explored in depression and bipolar disorder

KEY POINT

Two new effectiveness studies sponsored by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) shed light on the likelihood of drug response in patients with major depressive or bipolar disorder. Unfortunately, the studies show a minority of patients respond to initial therapy, recurrence is common, and there is no way to predict response to subsequent therapy in refractory patients. The studies are the first of several important trials whose results are being reported this year.
